Transitive and Intransiitive Verbs Essay

Section 1

What are transitive verbs?

The term transitive is derived from a Latin expression meaning " to go throughout. ” A transitive action-word " goes across” to the object. In other words, a transitive verb controls or " takes” a subject. A transitive verb requirements an object to complete this is. An object is that which (or one who) receives the action or perhaps is affected by it (Lester 149-50; T. Lovinger 457). Look at this word:

Alice feeds on a banana breakfast every day.

The subject of the verb is Alice. She's the person who the action: she eats. The object with the verb is actually a banana. A bicycle seat is afflicted with the actions of the verb. So with this sentence, the thing of the action-word ‘eat' is usually ‘a banana'. Verbs which may have objects are transitive verbs. As this example shows, transitive verbs typically illustrate what a subject matter is doing to a object (eating it when it comes to our example) (Sargeant fifty five; Lester 150).

If we to understand examples beneath

The man stole a coating.

Everyone loved the conference.

The driver noticed the hitch-hiker at the side of the trail. The man experienced no money.

In that case we realize that Transitive verbs can share not only activities (stole) but also thoughts (enjoyed), perception (saw) and possession (had) (Eastwood 8). Verbs which take an object (transitive verbs) can have a unaggressive form. And so we can help to make corresponding passive sentences to get: • They destroyed house. ≪—• house was destroyed. • This news surprised me personally. ≪—•I was surprised by the news (Hewings58).

After a few transitive verbs we can rule out the object because it would add little or perhaps nothing to the meaning: The man opposing was examining (a book).

We're going to take in (a meal).

A woman was driving (the coach).

We could also rule out the object following these verbs:

Ask/answer (a question), draw/paint (a picture), enter/leave (a room/building), pass/fail (a test/exam), play/win/lose (a game), practice (a skill), sing (a song), speak (a couple of words), examine (a subject). The following verbs can also be without an object in the event the context is apparent: begin, select, decide, listen to, help, find out, notice, find, and start. TAKE NOTE

There must be an object after discuss and reject.

The committee discussed the challenge.

This individual denied the accusation (eastwood 8).

Transitive verbs have got three types: mono-transitive verbs, di-transitive verbs and sophisticated transitive verbs, I will make an effort to discuss all of the three types in detail.

1 ) 1 Types of Transitive verbs

1 ) 1 . a. Mono-transitive verbs

Mono-transitive verbs require a sole object (Bourk 4). The word object normally implies direct object. (There is also a great indirect object, which all of us will come across in the second type of transitive verbs). An action verb accompanied by a single subject is by far the most frequent of all types of matches. All items are both noun phrases or pronouns. (Compound adjective and pronouns are counted as sole complements. ) Here are some examples, initial with noun phrases, and after that with pronouns. Verbs happen to be in italics and things are in bold: Noun phrase things

John saw Mary.

Theo washed his new car.

Pronoun objects

We watched all of them.

The children noticed us.

The noun phrase can be any structure that could be replaced with a third-person pronoun: noun classes, infinitives, or gerunds. For example: Noun clauses
